New government in Ottawa: is the promised change a “mirage”?

Twenty-eight ministers, ten secretaries of state, a new foreign minister. Prime Minister Mark Carney presented his new "crisis" government on Tuesday as a transformative change at a pivotal moment in Canada's history. But the country's press is far from convinced.

A little over two weeks after his party's victory in the general elections , Canadian Prime Minister, Liberal Mark Carney , announced the composition of his government on May 13, assuring that this renewal will bring about the "change" sought by voters.

With these appointments, the Prime Minister has two objectives in mind: “Define a new economic and security relationship with the United States and build a stronger economy for all Canadians.”

The first notable change is the arrival of Anita Anand, who will be the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Mélanie Joly. In a televised interview with Radio-Canada , she explained her decision to leave this prestigious position for that of Minister of Industry. In the tense context of the trade war with the United States, she said she preferred to "move from the diplomatic front to the economic front."

In this new executive, half of the appointees come from different regions of the country and have never been ministers, which in itself constitutes a renewal. However, The Globe and Mail warns : “Mark Carney's cabinet change is a mirage.”

The Canadian daily newspaper laments this
